In February, a little seasonal fun felt like just the right idea for a girls’ trip in Kochi. That led to Nishijima Horticultural Park in Nankoku City, where the winter chill faded the moment we stepped inside the greenhouse. The air was warm and softly scented with greenery and ripe strawberries—a sweet, easygoing pause from the cold.

Nishijima Horticultural Park

Warm inside, even on cold days
Nishijima Horticultural Park covers about 6 hectares, with 10 greenhouses spread across the grounds, and the scale was the first surprise.
Strawberry picking usually runs from around January to March, but the real sweet spot is early in the season, especially January and February. In colder weather, the berries ripen slowly, giving each fruit more time to develop its sweetness.

Coats off once inside the greenhouse
At this time of year, the greenhouses are pleasantly warm, so coats come off and strawberry picking feels easy and relaxed even in winter.
During this visit, the strawberries available for picking were Sachinoka. The 40-minute session takes place in one eight-row section, with all the strawberries in that area available to pick and taste. They also grow "Beni Hoppe" and "Yotsuboshi".

Large, plump strawberries with a satisfying weight
These days, many strawberries are impressively sweet, but "Sachinoka" had just the right mix of sweetness and tartness. Each berry was firm and satisfying, with juice bursting with every bite. The sweetness was clean and never too heavy, making it hard not to reach for another. Glossy berries that are red all the way to the tip are the ones to pick.

To make the most of strawberry picking, here’s a simple tip from the staff.Gently cup the tip side of the strawberry, turn the stem side downward, and pick it with a light rolling motion, almost like tossing a ball. The trick is to keep the touch gentle.
At peak season, the quality was clear. Starting from the tip or the stem end barely mattered; every bite had a bright balance of sweetness and tartness, with juice so full it nearly ran down the fingers.
After strawberry picking, the café on site makes an easy next stop. Freshly picked fruit appears on the sweets menu too, so the strawberry theme carries right through to dessert.

The most popular choice is the mini sundae. Despite the name, it comes loaded with five or six strawberries, making it far more substantial than it first appears.
The mixed strawberry-and-milk ice cream was especially memorable. Rather than being overly sweet, it had a clean, refreshing finish that let the fruit flavor come through.
The café also had plenty of tempting options for a post-picking treat, from pancakes and parfaits to fresh juice.

The melon in winter was the real surprise. Fragrant, carefully grown, and beautifully sweet, it felt like the kind of treat worth planning a stop around.
Around the café, families were enjoying generous slices of melon and watermelon, adding to the relaxed, cheerful mood of the park.

After strawberry picking and café sweets, the visit continues into a plant-filled space with about 200 varieties. Bougainvillea spreads across the ceiling, and tables are set beneath the vivid flowers.
It is an airy, photogenic spot for a short break before wrapping up the visit.

Souvenir Corner
The final stop was the shop selling local treats and gifts, with fresh strawberries picked that morning. From around December to March, shipping is also available, making these berries an easy seasonal gift during a winter trip in Japan. It is the kind of local treat that feels a little more personal than a standard souvenir.
Outside, there is also a small play area with a ring toss and simple playground equipment. For families with children, this park could easily stretch from a quick stop into a full day out.

Nishijima Horticultural Park makes a winter day in Kochi feel brighter, with strawberries to pick, sweets to try, and bougainvillea blooming overhead. For a winter girls’ trip in Kochi, it feels easy, cheerful, and just special enough to make the day memorable.
